Bangor Interdisciplinary Conference on Childhood and Youth
‘Regarding Children and Young People in the 21st Century’
A collaboration between the Schools of Education, Law, and Social Science at Bangor University, our conference is an exciting opportunity for cross-disciplinary debate and discussion about contemporary childhood and youth in national and international contexts.
The overarching theme for the conference - ‘Regarding Children and Young People in the 21st Century’ – invites a broad range of responses to the recent observations made by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child (June 2016) that the UK has an “intolerance” of childhood and a “disregard” towards its young people in general.
It is now nearly 30 years after the ratification of the UNCRC, during which time there has been a concurrent burgeoning of the international field of Childhood and Youth Studies alongside a prevalent emphasis on the agency and participation of children and young people. We would like the conference to offer a space for reflection and debate about where ‘we are up to’ and ‘where to next’ for children and young people in 21st century society within the broad contexts of Rights, Health, Education and the Law. We welcome contributions from across international contexts that respond broadly to debates about society’s ‘regard’ for children and young people.

Conference update 27.6.17
Please note there are some minor changes to the programme on Wednesday and Thursday. Unfortunately we are also unable to go ahead with the Ceilidh dance scheduled for Thursday evening. However, we will look forward to having dinner as planned with those of you who have booked in for that. We very much look forward to seeing you all in Bangor this week.
